Miki Ando: Biography

Miki Ando (安藤 美姫 Andō Miki, born December 18, 1987) is a Japanese figure skater. She is the 2007 and 2011 World Champion, 2011 Four Continents Champion, 2004 World Junior Champion, and a three-time (2004, 2005 & 2010) Japanese National Champion.

Ando is the first and only female skater to complete a quadruple jump successfully in competition. She accomplished this at the 2002–2003 Junior Grand Prix Final in The Hague.

Miki Ando is the 2007 and 2011 world champion.

Ando began skating at age nine ... At age 11, she landed her first triple jump (a Salchow) ... She is the first lady skater to land a quadruple Salchow in competition (at the JGP Final in 2002) ... Before skating, she also participated in swimming, ballet, piano and calligraphy ... 
Her skating idol is Yuka Sato, the 1994 world champion ... 

She was criticized heavily in 2006 for her disappointing performance at the 2006 Olympics ... She redeemed herself winning the world title the next year ... She had a very emotional season in 2007-08, breaking down twice during events (at the Grand Prix Final and at the world championships) ...

 As the defending champion, she skated off the ice with an injury during the free skate at the '08 worlds after falling twice to start her program ... She returned to the season-ending event in fine form in 2009, winning the bronze medal ... Had a strong first half of 2009-10, winning the silver at the Grand Prix Final, but finished off the podium at her last the events of the season ... Rebounded in 2010-11 to win five of her six events, including her second world title ... 

Sat out the 2011-12 season ... Said she plans to come back to competition in 2012-13 but announced in October 2012 that she would skip the Grand Prix Series.
